Mineral and chemical sunscreens are one of the most effective ways to prevent skin damage from UVA and UVB rays. People may develop the following conditions as a result of excessive sun damage:
Liver spots: UV exposure causes an overproduction of melanin, a pigment that appears brown or black under the skin. Liver spots are flat and often clustered over frequently exposed areas, such as the face, back of the hands, or upper back.
Poikiloderma of Civatte: This condition appears as a band of discolored skin across the neck or face. While UV damage exacerbates this skin issue, there are also thought to be contributing genetic and environmental factors.
Actinic keratosis: This condition causes scaly, dry patches on sensitive areas such as the lips, ears, and neck. It is more common in people over the age of 40, and may lead to skin cancer.
